Inclusion is a story about the Japanese American community in Hawaii at the onset of World War II. While Japanese Americans all along the West Coast of the USA were being sent to internment camps, why did this not happen in Hawaii? At the root of this story is an inclusive community that worked from the ground up to protect an embattled segment of its population. Inclusion documents how a high-level plan of mass removal was pitched to Hawaii prior to December 7, only to be rejected. The Council for Interracial Unity mapped two goals: minimize internment and maximize inclusion in the war effort. Packed with fascinating details, his work enlarges the understanding of this key era in American history.

Tom Coffman is the author of Inclusion and a political reporter. He has written six books, including Nation Within and Catch a Wave. He is a three-time recipient of the Hawaii Book Publishers Award for nonfiction. For his cumulative work he has received the Hawaii Award for Literature.
