
SF Opera’s Dazzling New Work The Monkey King

The music world is eagerly anticipating the premiere for the new opera The Monkey King. Based on the famous 16th-century Chinese novel, this opera features fabulous costumes, puppetry and dance as well as exciting music by Chinese American composer Huang Ruo and a libretto by the famous playwright David Henry Hwang.
As an Asian culture enthusiast, you can learn more about this captivating production and the speaker, Kip Cranna is the perfect person to explain the historical and literaty background as well as the plot, music, and libretto of this production with video and audio examples.
Kip Cranna worked for thirty years as the Director of Music Administration at the San Francisco Opera. He holds a PhD from Stanford in musicology and taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His entertaining opera lectures are hugely popular. He serves on the faculty of Stanford Continuing Studies, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at San Francisco State University, UC Berkeley and the Dominican University.
Registration Policies
The Society for Asian Art's cancellation policy requires at least one week's advance written notice in order to receive a refund of registration fees. This excludes our Travel programs, which have separate cancellation policies, as well as any programs where a specific refund policy is stated on the event page. Your fees will be returned to you through a check in the mail. To cancel, please contact us.
For programs located within the Asian Art Museum, the museum entrance fee must be paid separately and is not included with your registration fee.
Please note that by registering for a program, you are giving consent to the SAA to be photographed or videoed as a participant.
