SAA Advisor Dr. Robert P. Goldman, the William and Catherine Magistretti Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies at UC Berkeley, will be the keynote speaker. His talk, entitled "A Tale of Three Cities: Ethics, Morality and Civilization in Valmiki's Ramayana," will discuss some of the majore themes of the great Sanskrit epic and how the work has had such a profound influence on the religion, culture and society of hundreds of millions of people across Southern Asia from antiquity to the present day. Dr. Goldman will follow the geography of the poem's hero-avatara Ram's movements and his trials and triumphs from Ayodhya, the North Indian capital of the Lunar Dynasty of venerable kings through the Central Indian capital of the semi-divine monkeys, Kiskindha to the southern isle of Lanka, the stronghold of the demonic race of the raksasas, and back. In so doing, Dr. Goldman will attempt to shed light on the epic's enduring impact on the culture, religion, civilization, society and aesthetics of many countries in South and Southeast Asia. This talk will be illustrated with scenes from the Mewar Ramayana.

Invitations were sent to SAA members with RSVP instructions on May 2, 2022.
