This class will explore traditional epic stories from Central Asia existing as living phenomena in various oral and musical artistic forms. Alma Kunanbaeva, an expert in these remarkable oral professional genres, will guide participants in the exciting world of the epic cultures of Kazakh, Kyrgz, Karakalpak of Uzbekistan, and Turkmen. Each session will focus on an individual epic. Dr. Kunanbaeva is uniquely qualified to present this exploration as a native of the region and having earned her PhD in the field. This course should be of special interest to our storytellers.
