No culture exists in a vacuum, without a context or a past. During this lecture series, we will examine the ways that historical ideas, forms, and techniques continue to shape the arts and cultures of today. We will travel throughout Asia, discussing archeological discoveries and following the ancient traditions that created a path to the present. Identifying and tracking the linkages and roots of contemporary art will help us illuminate the relationship between past and present in the methods and subject matter of today’s artists.

Much has changed in the last few years at the Asian Art Museum. New curators and scholars have fresh ideas about objects in our collection. Others are re-examining common assumptions and ideas about the history, provenance, and context of even our well-known artifacts and will also introduce new acquisitions. to our audience.
