Textiles of Southwest China and Southeast Asia Study Group
Discover a world where mountains separate communities, but ancient trade routes connect cultures. In the regions bordering Southwest China and countries like Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar, textiles are more than beautiful objects—they are living expressions of identity, belief, and tradition.
Home to 35 major ethnic groups in China and over 100 across Southeast Asia, this region holds one of the richest textile traditions in the world. We’ll explore the artistry of communities such as the Miao (Hmong), Yao, Tujia, Zhuang, and beyond—where every stitch carries generations of knowledge.
From brightly embroidered baby carriers believed to guard and protect the young, to vibrant wedding blankets symbolizing prosperity, fertility, and continuity, these textiles are rich with meaning, memory, and cultural pride.
