The exhibition Beyond the Endgame brings together nine Paris-based artists of Chinese descent. The exhibition title evokes a powerful, multifaceted concept, hinting at the artists’ capacity to imagine–in times of crisis and change–images, concepts, and strategies that go beyond ultimate endpoint scenarios and open up a space of freedom and imagination.
Spanning three generations, the artists offer divergent approaches to endgame scenarios. The majority of the participants–including Chen Zhen, Du Zhenjun, Ru Xiaofan, Wang Du, and Yang Jiechang–were born in China during the 1950s and 1960s and emigrated to France in the late 1980s and 1990s. Their lives have been fundamentally shaped by rapidly changing political campaigns and radical societal transformations. Today, they are internationally celebrated figures. For them, incorporating disruption and cataclysm into thier art is a familiar, even foundational strategy. An Xiaotong, born in 1971, represents the middle generation, which often left China to study abroad or to expand their artistic practice. Meanwhile, the exhibition’s younger artists–Céline Shen (b. 1988, France) and the duo Felicitas Yang (b. 1994, Germany) and Armando Milano (b. 1994, USA)–approach the theme of the exhibition more systematically. Coming of age in the new millennium, this younger generation also confronts existential questions across many fields of life: from ecological collapse to societal upheaval.
