The art and culture of Japan inspired leading modern artists, including van Gogh and Monet, to create works of renewed vision and singular beauty. Join us for an inside look at the process of curating Looking East. Laura Allen takes us behind the scenes with stories of how the traveling exhibit from the MFA, Boston was re-imagined for the Asian's unique galleries and astute audiences. Beyond the obvious challenge – how small scale Japanese prints can be shown to advantage beside large Western paintings in gilded frames – the lecture will trace the process of adding interpretive layers to unpack Japanese artistic styles and contemplating "kimono-gate" and its implications for this museum. A last chance before we say farewell to this exhibition to get an insightful background from our own Laura Allen.

Laura Allen is Curator of Japanese Art at the AAM and was recently named Acting Chief Curator. Laura earned her PhD at UC Berkeley and has long been an independent scholar and has taught at various institutions, most recently at the University of San Francisco as Adjunct Professor. During the last docent training program she was the Scholar of Record for the Japanese section and is well known to all the docents and SAA members for her insightful presentations.
