The great epic, the Ramayana, has been transmitted orally and through dance for centuries, even before it was committed to the written word. As dance, iconic gestures and postures have been used to convey the different roles and actions of the characters. This lecture-demonstration will highlight the dance movements in the style of Bharata Natyam and will closely follow the four main characters in our upcoming exhibition The Rama Epic: Hero, Heroine, Ally, Foe. This will serve as a good introduction for the new exhibition that opens October 21.

Aggie Brenneman is a Docent, educator and dancer. She has been performing and teaching the art of Bharata Natyam for over 30 years and has studied under the famous masters of the art form in India. She has an MA in multi-cultural education and received a grant to research mythology in India. Through her involvement with this dance form she strives to preserve the ancient dance tradition of the South Indian Thanjavur Court.
