In 1893 Vivekananda arrived in the US for the First Parliament of World Religions held in Chicago. His message of unity in diversity was well received by the delegates, and the Press hailed him as a prophet and a seer for peace. It was the first time another non-western philosophy was brought before a western audience. He was offered a chair of Oriental Philosophy at Harvard and the Chair of Sanskrit at Columbia. He travelled extensively in the US and England spreading his message of the essential divinity of all beings and the unity of oneness of all existence. In 1899 Vivekananda arrived in San Francisco and formed the Vedanta Society.

Swami Tattwamayananda, who arrived from India last year, will discuss the work of the Vedanta Society and the impact of Vivekananda's life and teachings. Vedanta is the essence of Hindu philosophy as it applies to day-to-day life.
