SUMMARY:From Libraries to the Dunhuang Library Cave: Exploring Historical Memory in Art
DESCRIPTION:Renowned artist Xiaoze Xie will share the three-decade journey of his artistic exploration of history and memory\, highlighting his ambitious projects on the history of banned books in China and the dispersal and loss of the Dunhuang Library Cave’s cultural treasures. Through compelling images of paintings\, sculptures\, and multimedia installations\, he will discuss the ideas\, research\, and creative processes behind these works. He will also reflect on his distinctive approach to integrating scholarly research with artistic practice\, offering insight into the evolving direction of his recent projects. \nXiaoze Xie is an internationally recognized artist and the Paul L. & Phyllis Wattis Professor of Art at Stanford University. He received his Master of Fine Art degrees from the Central Academy of Arts & Design in Beijing and the University of North Texas. Xie has exhibited extensively in the US and internationally. His most recent solo exhibitions were at the Tsinghua University Art Museum in Beijing and the Asia Society Museum in New York City. Xie has participated in numerous group exhibitions including the 2026 Chengdu Biennale and the 2022 Wuhan Biennale. DESCRIPTION:1:00 p.m. Meet and mingle\n1:30 p.m. Conversation with Curator Martina Köppel-Yang via Zoom from Paris\n2:00 p.m. Tour of the exhibition\n3:00 p.m. Society event ends\n4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Qualia’s Opening Reception for the exhibition \nLight refreshments will be served. \nThis Society event ends at 3:00 p.m.\, but Society Sponsor and Donor members are invited to attend Qualia’s opening reception for the exhibition\, which will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. \nThe exhibition Beyond the Endgame brings together nine Paris-based artists of Chinese descent. The exhibition title evokes a powerful\, multifaceted concept\, hinting at the artists’ capacity to imagine–in times of crisis and change–images\, concepts\, and strategies that go beyond ultimate endpoint scenarios and open up a space of freedom and imagination. \nSpanning three generations\, the artists offer divergent approaches to endgame scenarios. The majority of the participants–including Chen Zhen\, Du Zhenjun\, Ru Xiaofan\, Wang Du\, and Yang Jiechang–were born in China during the 1950s and 1960s and emigrated to France in the late 1980s and 1990s. Their lives have been fundamentally shaped by rapidly changing political campaigns and radical societal transformations. Today\, they are internationally celebrated figures. For them\, incorporating disruption and cataclysm into thier art is a familiar\, even foundational strategy. An Xiaotong\, born in 1971\, represents the middle generation\, which often left China to study abroad or to expand their artistic practice. Meanwhile\, the exhibition’s younger artists–Céline Shen (b. 1988\, France) and the duo Felicitas Yang (b. 1994\, Germany) and Armando Milano (b. 1994\, USA)–approach the theme of the exhibition more systematically.
