Harking back to at least the Tang dynasty, the civil service exams, open to all male Chinese, resulted in the selection of the top literati candidates for service in the vast bureaucracy of Imperial China. Once selected these men were given authority and privileges of rank above all other citizens. The various symbols of civil and military official status and of court apparel will be discussed as well as the grueling civil service examination system that led to official appointments in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Dr. Hugus is a retired Space Rocket Engineer who is an avid collector of Chinese Rank Badges. He is the co-author of LADDER TO THE CLOUDS: Intrigue and Tradition in Chinese Rank, a comprehensive book on the subject.
