In the 1920's and 1930's the Japanese Shin Hanga (new prints) Movement swept across America. This talk will chart the art networks and dynamic human "agents" responsible for introducing shin hanga. Comparing this movement with the parallel explosion of Japanese gardens in America, it will examine the content of some of these prints that made them so compelling for audiences in America.

Kendall H. Brown is Professor of Asian Art History in the School of Art at California State University, Long Beach. He has published widely on various aspects of Japanese painting, prints and crafts, including the "Deco Japanese" exhibition currently touring the U.S., and is the founder of the North American Japanese Garden Association.
