This talk will focus on the key technological inventions of the Islamic world which had global implications. Dr. Watson will discuss the importance of lustre-ware, tin-glazes, painting in cobalt blue, and underglaze painting on pottery, as well as why pottery has such a high profile in our view of Islamic art.  Issues of survival of this art form and the economic impact on the world outside the Islamic lands will also be discussed.

Dr. Oliver Watson is the I.M. Pei Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at the Khalili Research Centre for the Art and Material Culture of the Middle East at the University of Oxford. Oxford is the largest and most active university for the study of the Islamic World. Arabic has been taught there for 400 years. Dr. Watson’s research interests are the art of the object and the history of ceramics. He is a leading expert on Islamic ceramics, metal ware, and glass wares. He is one of the Arts of Asia speakers this semester.

The Society for Asian Art's cancellation policy requires at least one week's advance written notice in order to receive a refund of registration fees. This excludes our Travel programs, which have separate cancellation policies, as well as any programs where a specific refund policy is stated on the event page. Your fees will be returned to you through a check in the mail. To cancel, please contact us.

For programs located within the Asian Art Museum, the museum entrance fee must be paid separately and is not included with your registration fee.
