Arts of Asia Lecture Series
Join the Society for Asian Art as we explore the concept of tradition in Asian art and culture with prominent scholars from across the country. The Fall 2010 series will examine the origins of traditions as well as how traditions are renewed, appropriated, and transformed over time. Topics as varied as Durga’s avatars, incarnations of the Buddha, ancient Chinese music, fresh takes on ink paintings, Japanese screens, glass-making from Syria to Afghanistan, male/female roles in Joseon Korea, Arts of Bali and Vietnam, changing images of Ravana and much more will be discussed.
First Thursday Lectures
These lectures are held on the first Thursday of the month and are open to the general public. Space is limited; reservations are required.
Beginning with the July 2006 lecture, there will be a nonrefundable $5 fee to attend.
We welcome opportunities to cosponsor events with the museum.
Literature and Culture of Asia Series
These are short courses of six sessions on weekend mornings. Recent subjects include
contemporary Chinese literature, the Ramayana, Tale of Genji, and Hindu mythology.
Study Groups
Typically held from 10 AM to 3 PM, study groups are designed to offer in-depth
study of a subject, often with a hands-on demonstration and evaluation of objects.
Symposia
Symposia are occasionally jointly organized by the SAA and the Asian Art Museum.
These are often planned for exhibitions and offer presentations by a panel of scholars.
Member Events
The Society offers other programs to members and the general public. Many of these, such
as dining soirées and visits to galleries, are held outside museum. To become a member, please see our membership section.
Travel
The Society is one museum group that organizes exciting trips. We
offer trips with outstanding scholars to international destinations, which
focus on Asian art activities. We also organize domestic trips to exhibitions,
private collections, and Asian art events in U.S. locations. Recent international destinations include Japan, Turkey, and Rajasthan.
