For one week every June, on the cusp of the summer monsoons, villagers throng a small alpine lake in the western Indian Himalayas. They plunge into its icy waters and circumambulate its perimeter neck deep. They are paying homage to the Budhi Nagin, or old female snake goddess, who lives in its watery depths. The Budhi Nagin is also celebrated as the “Goddess of Ghee” for the staggering quantities of this delicious buttery substance that play a central role in her sacred rites. In June 2013 Suzanne Klotz, our presenter, spent a week by the lakeside of the Goddess of Ghee and captured these rituals in video footage that she will share during this talk. Come and peer into a shrinking world of Himalayan folk goddesses who continue to be worshipped in time-honored ways.

Suzanne Klotz has travelled extensively by foot in the northwestern Indian Himalayas. Since 1991 she has made eighteen trips to remote areas of the mountainous states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh where she has studied and documented the village and tribal cultures. She has lectured at many venues in the San Francisco Bay Area and has published a number of articles.
