Kerala, on the southwest coast of India, remains alive with Gods, Goddesses, and Demons in temples, festivals, rituals, and the performing arts. It was formerly known as the Spice Coast to the Romans, Arabs, and Chinese, and finally, to the Portuguese in the 16th century. Kerala’s Hindu and other traditions have survived. The ancient Vedic chanting, a 10th-century Sanskrit theatre only recently known outside of temples, and a rich variety of performances usually connected with splendid temple festivals, will be touched upon this evening.

Graeme Vanderstoel first visited Kerala in 1960 primarily to see Kathakali, the sacred dance-drama. From 1966 to 1970 he was director of programs at the American Society for Eastern Arts and ran their program in Asian performing arts at Mills College, Oakland. He has toured the Kalamandalam Kathakali Company and returns to Kerala almost every year.
