Join the Society for Asian Art for an evening at a new Tibetan gallery, followed
by a traditional Tibetan dinner at Lhasa Moon. Garuda's proprietors Pemba Tsering
and Ogen Lhamo Tsepal, will introduce collectibles including bronzes, thangkas,
stone sculpture, chests, rugs and furniture, as well as an excellent selection
of contemporary crafts.

The Latest Research on Prehistoric Thai Ceramics

Dr. Armand Labbe, Director of Research and Collections, and Chief Curator at
the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art in Santa Ana will give a slide lecture about
Ban Chiang and other prehistoric Thai settlements best known for the beautiful
pottery and early bronze made by their inhabitants. UNESCO World Heritage Committee
has described Ban Chiang as "without question the most important prehistoric settlement
so far discovered in Southeast Asia - the center of a remarkable phenomenon of
human cultural, social, and technological evolution."

Early Tibetan Rugs

Noted Asian art collector and scholar Robert Piccus will discuss his rare and
comprehensive collection of early Tibetan rugs. Mr. Piccus will show slides and
some actual examples of rugs used both in lamaistic religious practice and in
daily life. He will explain weaving techniques, iconography and symbolism, and
how these magnificent pieces were used.
