The first eleven weeks of this course are dedicated to arts of Southeast Asia, concentrating on Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The arts of the Himalayas will be addressed in the last four weeks. Material covered will range from cultural remains of the earliest societies to works from the twentieth century. Building on knowledge from the fall 2004 Arts of South and West Asia, students will lean about the transmission, transformation, and adaptation of Hindu and Buddhist traditions as they were adopted by Southeast Asians. This course will cover major art historical developments, important monuments of the region, and also focus on objects in the museum's collection. A variety of prominent scholars will give guest lectures on the art of different regions as well as on religion and trade in Southeast Asia.
